The speaker series, “Technologies of the State: Governance, Social Welfare, and Activism,” hosted by the Sociology Department, continues this fall with a talk by Dr. Sharmila Rudrappa of the University of Illinois-Chicago. Dr. Rudrappa will give the talk, “Caste and Cane: From Sugarcane Fields to Ethanol in South India,” from 3:30-5:00pm on Monday, September 28th in the Z. Smith Reynolds Library Auditorium.
Dr. Rudrappa’s research interests are on reproductive markets, with a focus on the U.S. and India, and she is author of Discounted Life: The Price of Global Surrogacy in India (New York University Press, 2015).
